Step 1

Put your data in

One row per activity event. The only two columns you truly need are a user id and a date. Activity means whatever counts as using your product: a login, a session, an order, an invoice, an API call. Optional extras: an explicit signup date, and a segment column such as plan, channel, country or industry. CSV or TSV, with a header row.

How to read it

You are not looking at the level. You are looking at whether the line stops falling. A curve that settles onto a plateau, even a low one, means a real group of people found lasting value. A curve that decays toward zero means you are renting attention, and adding signups will hide that for about two quarters.

What to do with it

  1. Look only at whether the later periods are flat or still falling. Ignore the absolute number for now.
  2. Split by segment and by acquisition channel. If any single segment flattens, go and read that segment.
  3. Name the one action that predicts someone comes back, and measure what share of new users reach it.
