How much CEE startup funding goes to AI?
AI startups took 69% of the venture capital raised in Central and Eastern Europe from January to September 2026, €1.18 billion, up from 48% and €667 million a year earlier. In the Baltics, the largest round of the year, Oxylabs' €118 million, went to an AI company, and AI is the sector that raised the most capital in both Estonia and Lithuania.
The figures
| AI startups, January to September | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Capital raised | €667 million | €1.18 billion |
| Share of all capital | 48% | 69% |
| Rounds | 139 | 113 |
| Median round | €910,000 | €1.9 million |
In the BADideas funding report, AI raised more in nine months of 2026 than in all of 2025, when it raised €904 million. In 2024 it raised €414 million. AI closed fewer rounds than a year earlier, so the money is going into fewer, larger rounds.
| AI startups by stage, January to September | Capital 2025 | Capital 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-seed | €16 million | €11 million | −33% |
| Seed | €103 million | €162 million | +57% |
| Series A | €121 million | €166 million | +37% |

AI capital grew at every stage from seed up. Four rounds of €100 million or more are AI rounds: Mews, EnduroSat, Preply and Oxylabs.
What is changing
| Sector, January to September | Capital 2025 | Capital 2026 | Rounds 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI | €667 million | €1.18 billion | 113 |
| Hardware and robotics | €282 million | €390 million | 54 |
| Fintech | €288 million | €389 million | 35 |
| Enterprise software | €387 million | €388 million | 66 |
| Energy and climate | €270 million | €276 million | 22 |
| Defence and security | €245 million | €222 million | 48 |
| Education | €22 million | €147 million | 8 |

| Mobility and logistics | €80 million | €73 million | 17 |
| Health and bio | €102 million | €60 million | 21 |
A company can sit in several sectors, so sector totals overlap and add up to more than the market. Enterprise software, which overlaps heavily with AI, is the only other large sector whose capital grew at both seed and Series A. Hardware and robotics, fintech and education raised more in total, mostly because of one or two large rounds each. Energy and climate and health and bio closed less than half as many rounds as a year earlier.
Across CEE
AI is the sector that raised the most capital this year in seven of ten countries: Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Czechia, Ukraine, Hungary and Bulgaria. In Latvia and Romania it is enterprise software, and in Slovakia energy and climate.
What it means for you
- AI takes most of the money but fewer than half the rounds. About three in five rounds this year went to companies outside AI, so a non-AI company can still raise.
- AI rounds are larger. The median AI round doubled to €1.9 million, so an AI company raising seed competes with larger rounds.
- Expect to be compared with other AI companies. 42% of this year's rounds went to AI startups, so investors see many of them side by side.
